How to Grow a Basic Herb Garden

Herbs are some of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow both indoors and out. One of the reasons for this is because herbs have so many benefits. Herbs are often used for cooking, tea, medicine, skin care and fragrance. Some people grow their kitchen herbs indoors, in the kitchen of course. Others like to grow their various herbs outdoors in the garden. Growing a basic herb garden, whether indoors or out, is the perfect project for a beginning gardener. First, you need to decide what kind of herbs you want to grow.

If you enjoy herbs for their fragrance, you should consider growing aromatic beauties like lavender, lemon verbena, and various types of mint. You can even find kits for scented flowers and herbs like the chocolate scented daisy and tangerine scented marigold. Maybe you want herbs for tea. If so, you should consider growing herbs like mint, hyssop, lemongrass, sage and of course, chamomile. For the kitchen, you may want to grow herbs such as thyme, basil, parsley, chives and rosemary.

Basic Herb Garden

There are lots of herb garden kits that can be purchased at garden centers, home improvement stores and large variety stores like Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target and the like. These kits come with the seeds, small seed starting pots and soil. On the subject of starting seeds, you should usually start all seeds indoors, even if they are eventually going to be outdoors. When the sprouts have taken root and appear strong and sturdy they are ready to transplant outdoors. You may want to refer to a gardening book or your seed packet to learn the best time for planting specific herbs. One book you might want to check out on the subject of herb gardening is Little Herb Gardens: Simple Secrets for Glorious Gardens by Georgeann Brennan and Mimi Luebbermann with color photos by Faith Echtermeyer.

You can also plant a basic herb garden without a kit. You will need a mini greenhouse for germinating the seeds. Mini greenhouses are like plastic cartons with small compartments. Simply place the your potting soil in the compartments, plant your seeds, water the soil and close the carton. Heat and moisture will be retained, which will help your seeds grow properly. Ask around at your local garden shop if you need help buying supplies for your herb garden. The employees there should be able to direct you towards everything you need.
